Mortella’s Garden

The gardens were created by the English composer Sir William Walton and his Argentinian wife Susana Walton.  They engaged the famous landscape architect Russell Page, who designed an oasis of exotic plants and flowers from all over the world to include the dramatic volcanic rocks.  The garden is divided into two parts: A lower garden called “the valley” where there fountains, ponds and streams.  On the  upper gardens on “the hill garden” is terraced with retaining walls. There are three tropical green houses the‘”orchid house” with an array of orchids of every colour imaginable. When you get tired of walking around these 2 hectares of gardens, take a moment to sit and relax and have some refreshments in the cafe.  In Spring and Autumn every Saturday and Sunday, at twilight, there are organized concerts of classical music in the Greek theatre, which is very suggestive with the sunset in the background.
